MOZAMBIQUE HIGHLIGHTS
- MAPUTO -A bustling cosmopolitan and a monument to its colonial Portuguese past. Enjoy the refreshing sea breeze at the many restaurants serving locally caught seafood. Only a day trip away are the beaches of Macaneta and Island of Inhaca, a popular spot for diving and snorkeling.
- NORTHERN ISLANDS -In the far north lies paradise – Pemba and the Quirimbas Archipelago, a chain of 32 idyllic tropical islands. Here you’ll find some of the world’s richest coral reefs and most abundant marine life. The picturesque city of Pemba is the capital of Cabo Delgado province, which stretches up to the Rovuma River.Pemba is located on the south shore of Pemba Bay – the third-largest bay in the world. It’s a vibrant city with a modern port, international airport and some world-class hotels and restaurants.
- CENTRAL ISLANDS -Vilancoulos is the gateway to the beautiful Bazaruto archipelago. Vilancoulos’s faded glory contrasts strikingly to the incredible turquoise sea and the archipelago’s five main islands – Bazaruto, Benguera, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Banqué. Accessed via Vilancoulos, a marvellousy run-down yet still charming and vibrant colonial relic of a town, this may look like the south Pacific, but don’t be fooled – the larger islands of the Bazaruto archipelago still have a small population of crocodiles, a testament to the time when they were part of the African mainland. There are fresh-water lakes and the entire east coast of the island is a dune forest, with huge sand dunes towering alongside the tidal flats which are home to huge flocks of flamingos. The entire archipelago is alive with more than 160 species of birds, including the rare green coucal, olive bee-eater and purple-banded sunbird.
