Cape Town Tuna Fishing

Cape Town Tuna Fishing

The qualified and experienced skipper and crew will host your deep sea or bay fishing experience, catering to both seasoned anglers and novices. A day out on the sports fisher will be a fun filled, unforgettable day, whether you are fishing or just relaxing with a tailor made scenic tour.

The Cape waters have a worldwide reputation for tuna fishing. Yellowfin tuna of over a 100kgs are landed but the average size of the fish is 50kg – 70kg.

The day normally starts at 7am when we cast off from Simon’s Town jetty. We pass the S.A. navy base and the light-house at Roman Rock then make our way 12 nautical miles to Cape Point before heading out to the tuna grounds. This could be up to 40 nm but generally, it’s between 15 and 35 nm from Cape Point.

We target Yellowfin tuna, one of the world’s toughest, fighting fish and a smaller member of its family, the Longfin tuna. Very often Skipjack, Katonkel and Dorado (Dolphin-fish) are also landed.

Hooking up with one of the rulers of the blue world, the Mako or Blue shark gives a great fight, but these are caught on a strict catch & release basis only. Although not common, Marlin and Swordfish can be caught at certain times of the year.

On the return trip, it is often possible to catch yellowtail or snoek closer to Cape Point when the conditions are favourable.

Our day ends back at Simon’s Town jetty at approximately 4pm.

Marine life in and around False Bay is phenomenal. Large schools of various dolphins enter the bay and from June to November great numbers of Southern Right whales arrive in the bay to mate and calve. Bryde, Pilot and Sperm whales are also regular visitors to our waters and the occasional Killer whale (orca) is also sighted.

Thousands of Cape Fur Seals inhabit our shoreline with the most populated colony in False Bay being on Seal Island. Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town, is famous for its African Penguin colony.

The bird life along our coastline and offshore is spectacular. One can expect to see up to 5000 Pelagic sea birds fighting over the plentiful scraps behind an active trawler; included in this feeding frenzy are different species of Albatross, Petrels, Shearwaters, Cape Gannet, Skua, Terns and Gulls.

Please note: we do not offer a half day Game Fish & Tuna Charter due to the travelling time & distance of up to 40 nautical miles
